Midi CC messages

Hey all

Does anyone know if there are any plans or if it's actually possible to up date the ground control/ GCX to be able to send multiple CC messages with values per patch?
I ask because I'm a Helix user and had to buy their floor controller to make full use of the Helix and I came up agains similar issues with the Kemper. Just seems like something that would win a lot of fans if I could action snapshot changes on Helix as well as change loops.

Helix and GCX

Hey all
Looking to drive changes on my GCX from my Line 6 Helix.
Looking at the GCX manual its littered with warnings about connecting anything other than the Ground Control to the midi in on the GCX as pins 1 and 3 are powered.

Does anyone know if the midi out on the Helix has pins 1 and 3 connected and if it's OK to connect to the midi in on the GCX?

Thanks

Matt.

As a test, recall any preset that has both expression pedals active. Go into the Preset Edit Mode by pressing and holding the Edit button then use the Select Down button repeatedly to get to the P1 screen. While looking at the P1 screen, rock the pedal connected to P2 to be sure it is not affecting the first three digits on the screen. Then do same thing on the P2 screen but rock the pedal connecte to P1 to be sure it is not affecting the first three digits on the screen.

If the pedals look to work as they should I suppose you could look thru Setup Mode settings to be sure extra things are not turned on... like check under Device Name/Channel that only your Kemper is assigned a MIDI Channel and that the other locations are blank (unless you have added the H9 of course but it should at least be on a different MIDI Channel than the Kemper). Under Expanders make sure that only GCX #1 is On and that the VCA is OFF. Under MIDI make sure the Link Mode is set to None.

Let us know what you find!
Thanks John, will check out the things you've listed and get back to you.

Appreciate you taking the time.

JohnClark wrote:Oh were these units purchased used? If so, did you do a factory restore on the Ground Control Pro so you were at a known starting point before programming?

On a Ground Control Pro, the three digit firmware revision number scrolls across the screen when it is first powered up.

On a GCX you would look for the Loop LEDs to scroll from Right to Left when first powered up.

Let us know what you have!

John
The GCX was new the GCP was second hand (got to save cash where I can man). I actually didn't restore however nothing else seemed to be in there so I don't know if the previous owner had reset it.

In terms of versions if I recall it's 1.12... does that make sense or am I remembering incorrectly. I'll have to double check next week as I'm away for the weekend.

JohnClark wrote:Odd that the GCX is not responding either... does it's Active LED flash when you press buttons after the freeze occurs?

John.

When it locks up nothing changes on the GCX, if I remember rightly (because it hasn't done it in a couple of days), the Ground Control LEDs change registering the switch of presets but it doesn't have any effect on the GCX or the Kemper... which think logically, suggests the issue may well be with the Ground Control/Midi cable/Midi connection end of things... hmmmm.

I meant to ask, are there firmware/softward upgrades for the Ground Control/GCX? I've no idea if this is a thing and if so which version is the latest? Also, how do I find out which version I have.

Just wondering if that's a possible issue?

JohnClark wrote:Answering questions is what I'm here for, so ask away!

OK, so the MIDI connections seem just fine. Interesting that the GCX stops responding also. When this happens is there any activity on the GCX... for instance, does the Active LED flash when this happens? Does the Ground Control Pro still look like it is working or does it freeze too?
It's just the GCX and the Kemper. The GCP still changes screen.
The GCX doesn't change loops and the Kemper freezes and becomes inoperable and has to be restarted. It appeared to happen when I was setting up the pedal functions on the GCP and operated one of the pedals without actually setting it up. I don't know the the Kemper or GCX was getting confuse by themidi isntructions.

While I'm on and as an aside. I saw a post from 09 where you said that there was no way to add user assigned CC message to pedals in 10 preset mode. Has this change? It would be exceptionally useful as a function so I could have 1-5 as presets (matching the 5 slots in a Kemper performance) and then 6-10 would be to operate stomps via CC messages.

Maybe a better solution would be to allow users to assign pedals as preset pedals or instant access so they could have as many of each as they needed. Don't know if that's functionality that's possible or if it would be a hardware change.

Anyway thanks on your help so far with everything.

Hey again John. Bet you love the torrent of noob questions :D
So nothing going into the GC midi in. Just the power/miidi into the GC out and into the GCX and the from the last it on the GCX into the in on the Kemper. There will eventually be an out from the Kemper to my H9 but not at the moment.

Re: NOISE, NOISE, NOISE...

Well my budget was swinging wildly from Seymour Duncan Vapour Trail, via Moogerfooger MF delay, through Waza Craft and Jam Delay Llama (which has to be the best name for a pedal ever), to the holy grails of the DMM 1100T or the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall RKM version. But in all honesty I really don't need all the craziness the Chase Bliss pedal offers although it does sound sublime, so in all honesty £200 retail would be as high as I could go and I'd like to spend as little as possible.

I don't really use massively long delay times (and if I need that I can always use the digital delays on the Kemper), so I'm look more for good tone. However I have heard that long delay times give you cleaner and repeats at short settings and keep the dirt and modulation off until later which is an attractive prospect. So I'm probably be looking for as close to a 1000ms as possible

In terms of trems there really isn't one that sounds like what I'm after on the site and there doesn't appear to be any analog delays.
To be honest the trem is a nice to have so I could park that, I could really do with an analog delay. Get some of that proper BBD goodness happening.

The other thing I've been thinking about is a compressor. The holy grail being the Origin Effects Cali 76 Deluxe. Needs tweakabilty and absolutely needs a mix knob to blend compressed and dry signal.

Let me know what you think.

Re: NOISE, NOISE, NOISE...

bettsaj wrote:Regarding my pedals.... They are all hand made, with hand etched PCB's. Normally clones of classic pedals. The last one I built was an exact clone of the 18v Colorsound Power Boost, I made 2 one for me and one for a customer. The PCB is a 121 copy of an original, and the pedal performs as per the original. I'm currently building 3 Big Muff clones, 2 Rams Head clones based on David Gilmours Big Muff, and a clone of a Black Russian Big Muff for someone at work. I've just finished a Fuzz Face clone which is as basic as they get.

I don't advertise, I work on a "word of mouth" basis so it's not my main income, that being said they are cheaper than shop bought pedals... Generally they sell for approximately double what the cost of components are. So for example, a fuzz face probably costs about £25 to source the components (I tend to use vintage NOS parts where ever possible so that does bump the price up a bit), so a complete fuzz face will be around 50, if you want a DC socket and LED that's another fiver. If you're on a budget any pedal can be made with brand new components and they will be considerably cheaper.

So another thought.
Do you/have you/could you do analog delays and harmonic tremolos? Both things i've been shopping around for but, funnily enough, the ones I really like are MASSIVElY expensive.
