Pedal Power 3 question

Post by udi9 »

I have a PP3 and I love it. Works great.
I have a question about the 2 selectable-voltage outputs:
In most power supplies from other brands, the multi-voltage outputs have the highest mA rating on the 9V mode and as you go up in voltage (12V, 18V) the mA's drop accordingly.
I was wondering why the PP3 has the higher 500mA rating on the 12V and only 200mA on the 9V mode?

I needed one of these outputs to power my UAD Golden Reverberator, but it needs 400mA

Indeed, the Pedal Power 3 selectable outputs, in the 12V setting are 500mA capacity. But, since each of the other 9V outputs are 500mA capacity... why not simply use one of them to powering the UAD Golden Reverberator?

Thanks for the reply, Ben.
I already use all of the 9V outputs for other power hungry digital pedals...

Are you completely certain the actual current draw of each of these other six pedals is greater than 200mA?

If not, what are the specific pedal makes/models, perhaps I can advise?

Yeah, completely certain.
I have 2 HX Stomps that takes 1-4 (with doubler cables), a UAFX Starlight (400mA) on output 5 and a Strymon Iridium on 6 (500mA when using the headphones out - which I do).
I also have a Boss overdrive on output 7 (but it's optional anyway), and that leaves me with output 8 for my newly acquired UAFX Golden....
I just use a separate power supply with it for now.

I didn't read the manual close enough before purchasing the PP3 and I assumed all eight outputs are 500mA.
Oh well, lesson learned - never assume ;)

[EDIT]: just to make it clearer, I usually use output 7 for the Boss pedal, but I also use it for different low current pedals or a daisy chain of 2-3 OD's.

The thing that actually confused me about the PP3, was this paragraph on the main PP3 page:
"Each Pedal Power 3 output delivers up to 500mA of current to supply power-hungry modern DSP effects."

Also this, under Pedal Power 3 features:
* 8 isolated 500mA DC outputs • 6 x 9V, 2 x Switchable 9V/12V

I should have read the whole page more carefully.

Maybe you can edit that page to make it clearer for future buyers.

Dang. That's a power hungry mob, indeed.

Might be a... Pedal Power X4 Expander Kit in your future ;)

Also, thanks for the suggestion about the documentation and our apologies please for the confusion!!
